Admiral and the Marshman

Shadow of Sail

Born in the Norfolk fens as a "replacement child" for a deceased brother, Abraham Miller escapes a life of manual labour through the gift of literacy. In 1847, he becomes the clerk to Vice-Admiral Sir Graham Eden Hamond, a grieving Napoleonic war hero struggling with the transition from sail to steam.

As Abraham anchors the Admiral’s fading mind, he navigates the social upheavals of Victorian England, from the Great Exhibition to industrial London. Alongside the spirited Martha Rose Cooper, Abraham must eventually choose between loyal servitude and forging his own identity in a rapidly changing world.
